Southern Depot Snowflake

Snowflake Christmas ornament on historic block wood

I received a very special Christmas gift this week! It has such charm! This snowflake gift was made by my friend and it has such history! Please be sure to read this post!

Southern Depot was built in Childersburg, Alabama, in 1908. Childersburg was a busy railroad town until the late 1950s. By the 1970s the beautiful old train depot there was no longer needed and the town wasn't interested in maintaining it. My friend's husband tore down the depot and kept the wood. My friend used a piece of that lumber to create the wood block for this gift. She whitewashed the block, which I thought was a brilliant idea, as you are able to see the true beauty of the wood underneath the wash.

I love this gift for so many reasons. It was made especially for me and I appreciate it so much when people go to the trouble to make something handmade for me. She even cut the wood herself! My kind of woman! And, what  history! I'm so glad she told me the history behind the wood, as it makes it such a one-of-a-kind gift!

Thank you, my friend! I will cherish it!
