Repurposed lamp and custom shade

Repurposed lamp with custom shade
This repurposed lamp with custom lamp shade was one of those projects I wasn't expecting. A friend and I were at a local shop called The Refinery in Opelika, Alabama, when this lamp caught my eye! The Refinery is all about restoring, repurposing, and refining! That's exactly what I had in mind for this find!
I painted the lamp with the same Annie Sloan Barcelona Orange paint I used on my antique sewing machine cabin years ago. I highlighted the accents within the lamp with brown stain. I used my decorative fabric and theme for my craft room on the new inexpensive lamp shade I purchased. I just LOVE the look! And, it gives my workspace a little bit more inspiration!

This is the initial lamp!

I then wiped over the lamp with a brown stain to highlight all the details.

Now to create the lamp shade. I cut a strip of my fabric and pressed under 1/4 inch edge to make a hem -- no sewing required. I hot glued the folded side of the fabric onto the inside top edge of the lamp shade.

I folded the fabric over to the front side of the lamp shade, pulling tightly, and glued it with my hot glue gun.

I started adding the rope, securing it to the lamp shade with my hot glue. I continued around the lamp shade adding hot glue to secure the rope. Before I started adding fabric to the bottom of my lamp shade, I added one row of rope to the bottom edge of the lamp shade.
Glued the rope around the lamp shade.
For the bottom of the lamp shade, I glued the fabric to the inside edge of the lamp shade. I folded the fabric over the bottom edge, on top of the rope, then secured it tightly on the outside edge of the lamp shade. I then finished adding the rope to the shade.

My friend is in the process of building a new home and returning to the area. We were looking for antiques and ideas for her new home. The Refinery is a great place to check out if you have furniture projects in mind! The staff is really friendly and helpful! They talked to us about the awesome paints they sell. They will even help you restore a piece, or they will do it for you! Check them out!

Keep surfing, pinning, and creating!
